Speed bumps in Forest Glen
Add speed control bumps on Catalpa and Balmoral avenues from the ongoing speeding traffic that comes from Cicero Ave and head’s westbound. This is an ongoing and unsafe problem that has caused great stress to the residents of Forest Glen. The through traffic are from people who do not live in our neighborhood and speed in excess of 40 mph and blow through stop signs. Pedestrians and children are in harms way.
This proposal is being evaluated
Only the 5000 block of Catalpa is eligible for speedbumps due to proximity to a school, park, or house of worship.

There is a stop sign in front of our house and most cars passing through the neighborhood to avoid the rush hour traffic go right through it. If there were speed bumps they would slow down to not hurt their cars. Without the speed bumps they might hurt 1 of the many kids that live in this family oriented neighborhood.
This is a major safety issue. I live on Catalpa and cars speed down every day. My young children are often playing outside, with other neighbor kids too, and it is scary to see speeding cars down our block. Especially a block with so many young kids. The pros of speed bumps drastically outweigh any cons.
I constantly see people speeding down Catalpa from Cicero and blowing stop signs in the neighborhood. They also turn down the streets when no turns are allowed and speed the wrong way through the alleys. Speed bumps and other traffic calming measures are highly needed in Forest Glen so people stop using the streets to speed and avoid traffic. There are too many young children and elderly people walking that could easily get hit by these drivers.
Does the Aldermans office read these comments? I know they are anti speed bump and made up a rule that they will not add any more to the ward but the City of Chicago has a list of alternative options like bump outs and traffic circles that could be used in place. Also maybe just enforce the laws already in place? People turning off of Cicero during rush hour is illegal according to the signs posted and so is speeding and running stop signs.
This is an extreme safety issue. Multiple cars fly down Catalpa to avoid the traffic on Cicero. Unfortunately, Catalpa is the first sidestreet that cars can turn on at the end of the expressway ramp. (even though there's a "no right turn from 3 to 6pm" sign). Those people who drive down catalpa go thru the stop signs and don't stop. This is very dangerous for everyone on the block (especially the many kids). There are speed bumps in areas of Forest Glen, and Sauganash that are nowhere near schools, parks or houses of worship.
This should be a pedestrian safety issue not a "location" issue. We would prefer not to wait for a serious injury to happen before something gets done.
If you don't live here, you cannot comprehend how dangerous the traffic is heading through our neighborhood. I have narrowly missed being hit by someone speeding down the street who didn't even slow down for the stop sign on Catalpa and Lamon. When Cicero is backed up, Catalpa is the first street that frustrated drivers zoom down to get away from the traffic. Not sure why we cannot get some assistance to keep people safe in our neighborhood.
I can’t understand the logic here. We have speed bumps on a parkway that NEVER gets traffic ( Eden’s Pkwy),yet asking our alderman to support speed bumps on a street that is heavily, and may I say illegally, traveled on when Cicero is backed up which is the norm. What’s it going to take to get these installed, a tragedy? Perhaps contacting the media outlets in Chicago is our next step?
Please consider also adding speed bumps on Berwyn. These three streets together have become unsafe during evening rush hour as commuters fly through attempting to avoid backups at Foster and Cicero. The root remedy ultimately is a west bound Kennedy connector from east bound Edens. There would be a perfect place for it near Wilson near industrial buildings. This would reduce all of the commuters needing to exit into our neighborhood and find their way to the Lawrence or Foster entrance ramps.
