Protected Bike Lanes on Bryn Mawr
The idea of protected bike lanes on Bryn Mawr to connect the Sauganash Trail/Weber Spur on the west with the North Shore Channel on the east has been popular for years. This would make it safer for recreational and commuting cyclists to transverse this part of the Ward. Previous cost estimates, however, have made it difficult to win approval for the entire project through participatory budgeting.
This proposal envisions protected bike lanes on the south side of Bryn Mawr between Pulaski on the west and Central Park on the east, a half-mile stretch.
There is only one existing curb cut (access to the cemetery near Pulaski). The existing parking along this stretch can easily be given up given both declining enrollment at nearby Northeastern Illinois University and the abundance of on-campus parking.
Once this stretch has been completed, perhaps it will be easier to gain support for finishing the connection between these major cycling corridors.
