Renovate Mayfair Park Basketball Court
This project rebuilds and remodels the basketball court at Mayfair Park.
The basketball court at Mayfair Park currently has only 2 hoops. Several years ago, there were four hoops, centered on each side of the court. The community decided to remove 2 hoops to prevent frequent altercations, caused by people taking over the court as 1 giant full-sized court, rather than sharing the court which would accommodate 4 smaller games.
Mayfair Park Advisory Council is leading an effort to expand the basketball capacity in Mayfair Park. By creating a new configuration offsetting the hoops, there can be 4 games of basketball played simultaneously, which helps Mayfair Park better serve teenagers and adults. In addition, the court can be re-lined and repurposed to play other sports like pickleball or roller hockey. These changes will help Mayfair Park be enjoyed by more Mayfair neighbors and can expand Chicago Park District programming at Mayfair Park.

Conversation with Mayfair Neighbor
As someone who has lived in the immediate vicinity of Mayfair Park for years, I raise my voice in favor of maintaining the quieter nature and existing green space of our cherished park. Mayfair Park is a feature and asset of the neighborhood. It is enjoyed by local families, and there are increasing numbers of young families moving in to the neighborhood. Significant area was already utilized for the splash pad and playground installation. It would be disappointing and out of character to further expand the footprint of paved or surfaced area. Please consider pickleball and hoops for larger parks and consider programming for Mayfair which utilizes the fieldhouse and existing configurations and baseball fields. Keep this a pleasant outdoor space for all.
Thank you very much for your input on this project! It's the mission of Mayfair Park Advisory Council to support the park and provide resources so the park can enrich the lives of all Mayfair neighbors. We believe this project will do exactly that. Official plans are not drawn yet, but I want to be clear that the existing footprint of the playing surface for the basketball court will remain the same or be an imperceptible change (approx 3 feet). We know Mayfair Park is beautiful and we won't change that! It's the placement of the hoops that will allow expansion, not the size of the surface. Mayfair Park's short baseball diamonds are great for little league and softball, and the field house is very small, which facilitates great programming for young patrons. The goal of this project is to serve active teenagers and adults, which are currently underserved with existing programming and park resources. We believe this will address that need and we'd love your support!

I also voice my strong opinion that there should be no fencing added to what is now open. There seems to be no publicly viewable plan, which raises questions. I advocate for the park to be preserved as a park and park district programming embrace this concept. We have had lovely neighborhood concerts and markets etc in that open space. It is a special park and thank you for recognizing this.
This area will not be enclosed with permanent fencing. The concerts and vender portion of Mayfair Fest would be unaffected. We have a rendering that will be uploaded to this site but it's purely conceptual and although the Park District has approved this project/effort, they have not finalized any plans/designs. Your input is welcomed at our monthly meetings on the first Monday of every month at the Mayfair Park Field House at 6pm.
Please explain what is meant by "not enclosed with permanent fencing". This implies that there will be some sort of fencing and it would be helpful to understand what is being discussed, even if nothing has been finalized.
No plans have been drawn or finalized so this topic is still conceptual. There are pickleball courts in existence that have temporary netting set up as dividers to prevent each court from disrupting each other. If Mayfair's court were to have this feature it would need to be (and would be) completely removeable to facilitate when the court is set up for basketball or other purposes. Or we would just omit this piece to make it simpler to manage, store equipment, and set up. The park district staff would be in charge of regulating time and setup for each sport on the surface.
Thank you for the reply. It would certainly be a different scenario if (for example) what would be in place are short netting partitions which go up and down for a defined period of hours rather than taller perimeter or chain link type fencing panels left up all the time. So it is helpful that you are providing some additional clarification. If there is a photo or park which illustrates this concept the additional info would be appreciated.
Upgrade the building, playgrounds, and programming? Yes! Pickleball courts and more 1am basketball? No thanks.

As the mom of a young teen, I'm very much in favor of this project. The court tends to become monopolized by young adults very often and for endless hours. My son rarely goes there anymore because it's always busy when he goes. So, having a clear division of 2 courts would be great! Maybe some rules or sign up sheets need to be put into place so that the younger teens can have some court time too. 👍
I know some may be concerned about late night basketball. I know that some parks remove their nets at night to prevent late night games... can't this be done here too?
I am 69 years old and One of my favorite hobbies is playing basketball!
I also consider that it is a project that helps the physical and mental health of our young people.
