Pedestrian Refuge Island on Peterson/Keystone, near New Retail Development
The new Dunkin and Jersey Mike’s development near Peterson Ave/Keystone Ave has led to more pedestrian crossings than ever. The new Peoples Gas facility, thriving brewery, and established Starbucks create a need for better pedestrian movements across Peterson Ave.
This item proposes to add a pedestrian refuge island at Peterson/Keystone to protect pedestrians from vehicle traffic accidents. As shown in the attached image, similar protective islands have been installed throughout Chicago. A painted crosswalk could also be considered by CDOT at this location.
All proposals have been rated by the PB Committee to gauge community need and overall impact. This project did not reach the Safety and Environment Committee evaluation threshold to move forward in this year's cycle.
