New traffic lights and markings at Foster and Kostner
The intersection at Foster and Kostner is dangerous. Vehicles often ignore the timer-based traffic lights that date from the 1950's. The lights are dim and the poles are leaning as they are rusting at the bottom. A frequent flow of pedestrians, bicyclists, and strollers cross here to access the North Branch trail (LaBagh Woods) and Gompers Park. Possible improvements: (1) rather than timers, "smart" or "intelligent" sensor-based traffic signals that detect when vehicles are present, (2) high-visibility traffic signal heads, (3) move stop lines back to make more room for pedestrian crosswalks, (4) improved pavement markings, (5) new sidewalk access ramps for safer crossing for wheelchairs and strollers, (6) improved lighting as softball, baseball, and football games run late into the evening.
