Bump Outs at the Intersection of N. Keating Ave. and W. Peterson Ave.
Location: Intersection of N. Keating Ave. and W. Peterson Ave.
Many families use this intersection to travel to and from Sauganash Elementary. The street’s width and traffic’s speed make crossing here dangerous, especially with cars zooming by in the outside lanes. Because it is so close to N. Cicero Ave., is not a good place for a traffic light or stop sign. Bump-outs will reduce the total crossing distance for pedestrians and provide speed-reducing traffic calming for passing drivers, helping pedestrians feel safer.

This is an excellent example of a strong candidate for bumpouts. Because of the excess width of the road, bumpouts can easily be installed without impacting traffic flow at all while elevating pedestrians at the crossing, reducing crossing distance, and slowing through traffic which may be encouraged to speed due to the width of the roadway. Bumpouts would also reduce the speed of turning vehicles from Keating providing further safety benefits to pedestrians.

The bump-outs make it unsafe for bikers. It forces bikers into car traffic.
There are a variety of bumpout designs which feature bike-friendly solutions, such as ramps which allow bicyclists to ride over the bumpout or slots which allow them to ride through the bumpout. Currently on Peterson there are no dedicated bicycle facilities so bicyclists are already riding among vehicle traffic. Along with bumpouts, lane narrowing could be implemented which could provide space for a dedicated bike lane which would be reinforced by the use of bike-friendly bumpouts--the existing roadway as exceptionally wide and there is plenty of space for this without impacting existing traffic patterns. Bicycle and pedestrian safety certainly don't need to be mutually exclusive!
Would this proposal also include resurfacing 6000 N. Keating block if bump outs are installed? That block is a heavily used street by Sauganash School parents and is in desperate need of repair.
