Solomon Elementary School Playground and Site Improvements
Location: Solomon Elementary School, 6206 N. Hamlin Ave.
The playground and expansive asphalt schoolyard at Solomon Elementary School in North Park are vital public spaces for families throughout the year despite a lack of seating. The rubber safety surface below the play equipment is completely broken in many locations, and the schoolyard does not incorporate adequate outdoor teaching facilities. Building from a robust public survey conducted by the principal of Solomon Elementary, menu money would be spent on the highest concerns for playground safety repairs, durable public benches, and natural play equipment that can serve as an outdoor classroom.

Completely agree with this proposal!
In my humble opinion, perhaps adding more plants and trees within the school playground would also be great! From what I see, I think it is too much concrete.
More natural elements around a school can greatly benefit students mentally and physically. Not to mention that more adequate vegetation can also dramatically lower violent crimes.
This request has been carried over from last year. Additional images of playground damage and aerial photos of proposed improvements are available.
Any amount of planting , benches, and reduction of asphalt paving would be an improvement. The budget can be adjusted to accommodate available resources.
This landscape serves as an important public space all year round for residents. Outdoor classrooms and natural play elements are being installed in several schools throughout CPS, Solomon deserves this!
Conversation with Cathy K
Solomon serves as Peterson Park's central square. Without seating, however, opportunity for community-building and inter-generational interaction is decreased. It's human nature to chat with neighbors while kids are playing; to pause and sit while taking a walk; for people of all ages to simply seek human contact with neighbors. However, at Solomon the only option is to stand or sit on the concrete, which is blazing hot in the warm months since there is no tree shade.
love this!
Absolutely yes!
I don't have kids there but that is a great school and the playground is in bad shape.
To all fellow 39th Ward residence reading this:
Please consider helping this school with your endorsement and vote.
Solomon Elementary School is at a disadvantage as far as PB votes.
Unlike other great schools in the 39th Ward Solomon is located on the edge of the ward and the majority of residents living near the school are unable to vote because they live in the 50th Ward.
With the 50th Ward one block east, Lincolnwood one block to the north and the Nature Center to the south Solomon Elementary could use your help. Please consider making a difference for the students and faculty there.
Thank you!
Always sitting on the hot and rocky asphalt because there are no benches or seats of any kind is disrespectful to students and teachers and neighbors. Kids try getting comfortable on the incredibly small patch of plastic grass and then spill gatorade and food all over it. Solomon has been stuck with this horrible area since I was a baby and now I'm in high school. It has only gotten worse.
My child is a kindergartener at Solomon this year. We heard great things about the school and my child is having a great experience because of the faculty and staff. However, when my husband and I were considering our offer from Solomon (we live outside the boundaries) the sight of the playground made me sad and start to doubt whether the school was a good fit for our (very active) son. The playground is not an accurate representation of the school and I really hope the residents of the 39th district choose to invest in the school- it certainly deserves it.
Improvements to the open space by Solomon are long overdue. The open space is covered with asphalt, surrounded by chain-link fencing, and has a broken play structure. Adding trees and landscaping, benches, and an improved play structure is much needed for this well-used neighborhood spot. Accessing other open spaces nearby requires crossing busy streets (Peterson or Pulaski), which is more challenging with younger children. I'm strongly in favor of investing in this space.
Please put a gate in the fence at the corner of Avers and Rosemont - I am tired of waiting for some kid to fall after climbing over the fence to retrieve a ball. As the weather turns warmer, the amount of times a day a kid climbs over the fence increases. Please realize that there is a gate on Avers south of Rosemont that is nowhere near the Rosemont fence that the ball sails over, and that gate is locked at all times.
