Safety Measures for School Crosswalk at Peterson and Kilpatrick
Illinois Department of Transportation’s safety data from the Vulnerable Road Users document found that children, teenagers, and younger adults - despite representing only 26% of the population in Illinois - were involved in nearly 30% of pedestrian crashes, and in the past 5 years pedestrian fatalities increased 18%.
Children deserve a safe and direct way to get to school. The school crosswalk at Peterson and Kilpatrick is dangerous and needs safety measures to help stop cars so people can cross. Based on similar intersections in Chicago, like Irving Park Rd. & Bell Ave. we are asking for: A) Pedestrian island on the west side of Peterson Ave. (at Kilpatrick) recommended in CDOT's 11/9/2022 traffic study, B) RRFBs (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons) installed at the intersection OR if deemed safer, a pedestrian activated traffic light. These two measures give us the best chance to get a crossing guard at this intersection.
