Foster Avenue Bike Lane - Connect the North Branch and River Path Trails
The River path and the North Branch trail are some of the North side's most beloved public spaces. And yet, biking between them is labyrinthine. Navigating involves maneuvering around obstacles like the river bifurcation and Bohemian Cemetery. From the South, cyclists must turn off at Ainslie; from the North, options include a gravel path shortcut or a winding route through Sauganash. Foster, a crucial road, lacks explicit indication for shared use, limiting its accessibility despite its significance in the 39th ward. Creating a bike lane on Foster will enhance the connection between wards and essential public spaces, all while building a safer Foster Avenue. Envisioning a dream scenario, cyclists could navigate from 39th ward eateries to destinations like the Botanic Gardens, AND students/parents/teachers could safely bike to one of the SEVEN schools off Foster via a designated bike path, offering safer and more convenient travel options for everyone.

This would be awesome!!!!
This is so needed!!!
Conversation with Andrew Johnson
What stretch of Foster would this proposal cover?
Ideally entrance of North Branch Trail in Gompers to the entrance of the River Path just east of Kedzie.
I’ve been wishing for this for so long!
This will literally save lives. Thank you for initiating this!!!
This would solve the problems that several other proposals brought up concerning traffic around Gompers. It seems that there is overwhelming support for safety changes to Foster.
It would be good to combine these proposals to do a full streetscape involving:
Bike lanes that connect trails
Raised crosswalks to Gompers
Improved streetlight at Tripp
Neat idea ! And it's not a priority, considering the ADA accessibility proposals and playground safety proposals.
