Pedestrian Safety Infrastructure Remedies at W Belle Plaine and N Keeler Aves - Carry Forward Program from Cycle 4
Currently it is incredibly unsafe for pedestrians at W Belle Plaine and N Keeler Ave because of issues including:
- no current crosswalk west to east across Keeler at Belle Plaine although a walk signal exists
- there is a crosswalk from south to north on Belle Plaine but there's no walk signal
- there's no visible crosswalk going from south to north across the on-ramp to I-90 and this is a huge problem because drivers either block it, or worse they just blow right through and don't notice pedestrians.
It's not easy to walk on the east side of the street because there's no crosswalk on that side of the street to even cross W Irving Park Rd from the Metra. I’m proposing a walk signal on the east side of W Belle Plaine Ave, a visible crosswalk and longer walk signal for a time where drivers aren’t allowed to turn left at the on ramp to the highway, and a crosswalk going east to west where there currently isn’t one at W Belle Plaine and N Keeler Aves. Our residents deserve safety.

Although I did not create this proposal, I could not think of a better way to spend additional funding. I live on this block and cannot begin to count the amount of times I've seen pedestrians nearly run down by cars trying to make a green light while turning onto the highway. It’s not completely their fault as it is difficult to see pedestrians while driving under the highway and approaching the intersection. It’s happened to my family multiple times and happens to others on a daily basis. The most concerning aspect of this is the fact that it is a main thoroughfare for Belding students/families walking to and from school each day for those who live south of the highway. The walk to school falls right during rush-hour which simply compounds the issue.
Better lighting in the area would help too.
My dream would be for a pedestrian tunnel under the highway.
