Bicycle improvements on Milwaukee Ave
Milwaukee Ave is one of the busiest bikeways in Chicago. It is also terrifying to bike on, especially in the busy areas between Division and Armitage, much of which is within the 1st Ward. Most of this stretch has dashed lines encouraging cyclists to ride in the "door zone." Example ideas:
- Add cyclist counter to help justify future projects
- Redistribute parking from one side of street to other locations. While the parking meter deal doesn't allow for spaces to be removed, they can be relocated. This would give space for more robust bike infrastructure such as physically protected bike lanes.
- Carve out space for loading zones for the many, many delivery trucks on Mke to help keep them out of bike lanes. This might be a certain time of day rather than an all-day loading zone.
- Have "Open Streets" events like on State St where Mke is open to all non-vehicle traffic only with some frequency, perhaps on a weekend evening.
This proposal is being evaluated
This is a bike infrastructure proposal that is completely within the purview of the 1st Ward Office's discretionary "Menu" infrastructure funds. For comparative cost, the Logan Square Bike Lanes cost approximately $320,000.
