New Solomon Elementary Playground
Residents of the 32nd precinct would like to propose replacing the Solomon Elementary playground.
The playground has been deteriorating for some time. The rubber flooring is dried out from the sun and falling apart. Much of the metal structure in the playground is rusting. Entire pieces of equipment are missing .
We place great value on our children’s safety as well as their education. The 39th Ward would benefit from a new Solomon Elementary School playground, some green space, and shaded seating areas.

I’m so enthused by this project! It will be great for our community. Solomon is central gathering point in Peterson Park. We need shaded places to sit and visit with our neighbors:) our kids need a safe place to play together. And we need to incorporate more nature into our children’s play and education! Thank you for this submission!
Great idea, and similar to the other proposal to create seating/nature play at Solomon. Would be great to combine these ideas with beautiful rain gardens, outdoor classrooms, and seating options!
This public space is incredibly popular throughout the day and year, we need to support the community with better facilities.
Absolutely yes!
I don't have kids there but that is a great school and the playground is in bad shape.
To all fellow 39th Ward residence reading this:
Please consider helping this school with your endorsement and vote.
Solomon Elementary School is at a disadvantage as far as PB votes.
Unlike other great schools in the 39th Ward Solomon is located on the edge of the ward and the majority of residents living near the school are unable to vote because they live in the 50th Ward.
With the 50th Ward one block east, Lincolnwood one block to the north and the Nature Center to the south Solomon Elementary could use your help. Please consider making a difference for the students and faculty there.
Thank you!
Yes please! Growing up, I played outside. It's nice to have a place where the kids from the neighborhood could come and play together. Over the summer after work, I would take my niece and nephew to the playground. I was surprised with the amount of kids playing baseball and kickball. It was a heartwarming that in this day and age of technology, kids are out playing.
The Solomon playground is a meeting space for many in the neighborhood, not just the student body. Currently the equipment is in disrepair and the entire space is hardscaped. Repairing the equipment with ensure safety for the children using it and adding more greenspace will help air quality, give the rainwater a place to go to reduce flood risk, and improve the overall quality of the ward in, quite frankly, an underfunded area of the 39th Ward.
The "playground" is a car parking lot onto which a small rubber mat and some broken down equipment sits. It's dangerous.
Yes please!!! We do need the playground for our kids to play.
Thanks!
Fethi.

Always sitting on the hot and rocky asphalt because there are no benches or seats of any kind is disrespectful to students and teachers and neighbors. Kids try getting comfortable on the incredibly small patch of plastic grass and then spill gatorade and food all over it. Solomon has been stuck with this horrible area since I was a baby and now I'm in highschool. It has only gotten worse.
Well said!
Great idea! Did it for other schools, let’s do it for Solomon!
Great Idea, let's ensure the funding gets applied to the school playground.
When I walk past Solomon, it’s a joy to see kids playing and parents chatting. Feels like a suburb in the city. It’s clear that there is a real community within a neighborhood that comes from Solomon. I support this proposal as it means we care to have a safe and comfortable place for the kids and their families!
Sorry, I didn't see that thumbs up "in favor" thing the first time : )
Most definitely in favor of this proposal! Much needed for our students. Our Solomon community is so deserving of a new playground!
A safe new playground would benefit both the children of Solomon and the neighborhood children. A bit of shade and a proper bench to sit on is essential. In blistering heat, the equipment is not usable. A bench is also sorely needed. It is not a friendly playground for use. Since children of all ages linger later in day and on weekends, let's make it a wholesome, safe place to gather. Let's use materials that are extra sturdy with the possibility of repair, if necessary. Let's not get the cheapest package deal to do it. Playground equipment must be able to withstand the unique challenges children present. And Let's not forget to make it accessible to children with differences. Everyone needs to play. A new playground will enhance our neighborhood and our school. Don't forget to have a patrol car routinely check our neighborhood for safety!
There is no better way to invest in the community and in our Solomon family- current and future with this project idea.
The state of this playground equipment is simply unacceptable. Its lack of safety is a liability for the City and it needs to be re-done immediately. It's a shame that Ravenswood, Jamieson, etc have such incredible playgrounds and community areas, and Solomon has what it has.
Solomon is a great school and its playground is used by pretty much everyone in the neighborhood, by people who have kids who have gone there, is going there and will be going there. We need its playground updated to help keep our kids active and healthy.

Solomon is more than a just a neighborhood school, it is also a publicc space, a center of activity for all children in the neighborhood. The school has a proven track record of both academic success and inclusivity. Solomon and the neighborhood deserves a better playground, adults please make better playground for the children.

I live across the street and have two small children (2 years old and 9 months old). My window shades are always open and we like to watch all the children play. It’s a beautiful sight to see all the school and neighborhood children playing and exercising outside. The playground needs to be upgraded because right now it’s not the safest. The black asphalt is breaking apart and many pieces are broken or falling apart especially the play area for smaller children. My child runs and trips over the asphalt and I am a helicopter parent who is chasing and keeping my eyes out for the safety of my kids but also other neighbor kids as well so I notice this stuff!
This playground is unsafe and I usually have to drive over to lincolnwood to go to their parks in order to give my kids a variety of things to do and make sure they’re safe!
Parents also need a place to sit and watch their kids play too.
New playground equipment is much needed for this open space that's used by Solomon Elementary students and neighborhood families. I completely support the use of funds to improve the open space at Solomon Elementary.
