Comments from 33rd Ward's office - Alderman's office has had the Dog Park in this process previously and allocated $50,000 already to Horner Park Dog Park. $25K through PB and another $25k from the Alderman
The Horner Park Advisory Council (HPAC) supports additional funding for the Dog Park. The dog park is a welcoming community gathering space and one of the park’s most-used amenities. HPAC began working on this neighborhood project in 2012, and it is community funded and maintained by volunteers. The Chicago Park District does not contribute to the funding for dog parks in Chicago. More than $175,000 has been raised over the last eight years through contributions from neighbors and local businesses; however, projects of this scope are extremely expensive. The fencing went up in 2018, and Phase Two work – which included a paved entryway, water fountain and benches – was completed this summer. But there is more left to do, including the installation of turf play fields so the park can be better used in all weather conditions. Upgrades will also make the dog park more ADA accessible.
I gotta say, it sure feels like HPAC has a lot of this covered. While turf at the dog park could be a great addition I think ongoing fundraising efforts might be able to cover this instead of taking it from the ward budget. The last round of the budget gave significantly to this project already, and I feel like there are other programs that are more needed.
Without the turf the dog park is unusable for a good deal of time throughout the Fall, Winter and Spring when the ground gets wet and it's just a pit of dirty mud. Neither humans nor dogs enjoy walking in deep mud. The holes in the ground throughout the park also make it unsafe for older folks and people with disabilities to walk around and supervise or pick up after their dog(s).
