First Ward Micro-Orchards
Work with the newly formed Urban Forestry Advisory Board (and likely a range of other partners) to explore the potential of establishing micro-orchards along the unshaded and under-canopied streets running through the First Ward. At present, West Town’s tree canopy is estimated to be at 14% and Logan Square's is approximately 18% covered per mapping done by the Chicago Regional Trees Initiative.
The benefit of fruit+nut tree-focused edible landscape is three-fold:
1) It could provide much needed shade for residents, pedestrians, people waiting for buses, and reduce the heat island effect.
2) Edible landscapes can offer a sustainable source of food for the area’s most vulnerable residents.
3) Carbon sequestration
